It is said that there are things older than Sauron which dwell in the dark depths of Moria. In 2989 of the Third Age, Balin of the Longbeards set out to recolonize the long empty halls of Khazad-dûm. All events that took place were recorded in a book. The Book of Mazarbul. Named so for where Balin took his residence, the old Chamber of Records. They recovered many priceless artifacts from the lifeless halls. Their time of peace would be shortlived however. Balin was slain by Orcs who attacked from the East-gate. The West-gate was also watched by the mysterious creature known as the Watcher in the Water, which took the life of one dwarf. Beleaguered on both sides the Dwarves made their last stand in the Chamber of Mazarbul, where the Orcs eventually overcame and destroyed them. It would seem the Orcs did not understand the significance of the Book. It was left to rot for years upon years in that chamber of death. The Dwarves desire to know what has happened to Balin. That is where you come in. Few have delved into the depths of Moria and emerged from either gate. Even fewer have caught a glimpse of the mysterious and powerful creature that is said to inhabit the darkest depths of Khazad-dûm. The creature who slew Durin VI along with his son Náin I and caused the desertion of the Dwarves who inhabited its halls. You who dare to enter upon Durin's halls shall retrieve the Book of Mazarbul for the Dwarves. It will require much skill and thought to make it in and out of Moria, but I have faith in you. Beware though, for there are some things more powerful and ancient than you could imagine. Good luck my friend, may Mahal protect you.
