Did anyone else like the song that was sort of a theme for Isengard? I think it really set the mood of what Saruman was about, you can hear iron being worked in the background as the war drums hammer out a beat. It just speaks of war to me, Howard Shore did an excellent job in the sound department.

Yes, I absolutely loved it! It really gave off a sort of sinister feeling, yet not one that exactly evoked fear, more of a sense of war preparation. Howard Shore is a musical genius

All I can say is that particular piece fitted really well to the scene where it was used. It does set the "war-fever" mood and it was really coarse, hard on the ears in that sense; almost like how the orcs are. Hard, rough, fierce and just built for battle. Howard Shore was absolutely brilliant when he composed all the songs in the soundtrack, he had the story, the scenes and right feel in mind, it's so direct and not at all confused like how some movie soundtracks sound.

That's a really good way to describe it, hard on the ears, sort of like orcs. I thought it just conveyed a mood of tree ripping, hammer pounding, blood flowing.

I think part of the reason why that happened was that the Isengard theme was in 5/4, where there were five beats to a bar, and that gave it the industrial, warlike feel. I do agree that the music was totallly cool for all the films as well.

To me, the music carries Tolkiens feel of industry over nature thing into the mood of the movie. Ermm, I am having trouble wording what I am trying to say so I hope that makes sense

I myself loved the music that they played at those partitcular spots in the movie. The drums and deep beats make it more inticing to listen to and put the sounds of going to battle more powerful to me. Great score i think. Job well done in fact.

this song is my favourite, the drums and brass really drove a strong, haunting, powerful piece through, and really captured the moment and built the atmosphere.

I understand what you mean, Runyad. The whole Saruman thing is like showing how Tolkien felt that nature was being destroyed by industry. That was built up in the books to the Scouring of the Shire, where the place that was home to the hobbits was destroyed by Saruman and his machines. The throbbing drum beat really does sound like hammers.
It was really funny though when we did a practice paper for Music listening exams, and one of the tracks we had to listen to was from A knife in the Dark (from fotr), which has the Isengard theme at the end, and we had to use devices and how they create the mood. I can't remember what I put, though.

That's cool, Fiwen. We played LotR music a couple of years ago in band, but it wasn't anything special, just the main theme and some other stuff that I can't rememeber.
As for the Isengard-ish theme thinger, it does go wonderfully with the image sequences, and I am often left wondering, how the heck did the composers do it? It's beautiful music, and it helps the movie flow along, at times, I think. 2 thumbs up
