Smeagol was the original name of him. He was named Gollum after the sound he made

The character suffered from split personalities, so to simplify matters, the name Gollum is used to refer to the evil side, the treacherous, cynical creature who's beyond redemption. While Smeagol was used in reference of the the more innocent, guillble side. In the movies, you could tell them apart by their pupils, Smeagol had dilated pupils while Gollum's pupils were constricted and tiny. At least that's what I think.

in a way, Smeagol also called himself gollum because he didn't remember his real name, and gollum was all he remebered. I also think in all the time in the cave, the smeagol side of gollum never really showed itself, because in the movie, gollum says we survived because of me

I think you could also tell by their voices. Smeagol was higher and more nasal, whereas Gollum was more guttural and throaty.

Lol! The voices? Yea I guess, I liked the part when Gollum was speaking with himself, it was kind of interesting watching him have a whole conversation with himself. Gollum is the one who keeps saying 'precious' I believe.

I did that once... but yeah. The voices really distinguish. Smeagols is more... happy. It has more of a normal tone to it. Gollum is just the sinister one. SO fun to make fun of.

the scene where he talks to himself, in fact all of them, are great, I remember being at the launch and everyone laughed at the first scene where he does this, it was highly amusing. It must have been so hard though, fighting with yourself, it makes him seem very real, there is this darker side and a kind side, you pity him almost for having the ring and being corrupted like that.

It just goes to prove what a terrific job Andy Serkis did. Far and Away the best actor on the movies in my mind. He bought Gollum/Smeagol to life exactly the way I envisioned him when I read the books.

Andy Serkis really was the best actor, and the one that gets the least attention, usually. Think how hard it must've been on his throat to make that voice constantly.Gollum was definitely the most believable, in my opinion.

Think how hard it must have been on his body! He threw himself all around the place, twice! The first time acting with the hobbits, secondly in the room with all the censor-pad things on him. He was even fumbling through pools of water which were infrozen just for the scene!

ooohhhhhh *shudder* I can't imagine what it's like. And he must've been so cold, all he had on was that suit! He is truly amazing. Howevver, I like how his inspiration for his gollum sound was his cat hawcking up a hairball.

Two names..two personalities
Smeagol, his real name Gollum-his villianous name, named after the noise he made in his throat
